Technology is an ever present part of today’s school system. As a result of this increased exposure to the digital world, schools are now encountering more and more concerns with privacy and surveillance.

Future of Privacy Forum approached us to create a series of illustrations and an animated video outlining the technologies that schools use or are considering, privacy harms that can result from surveillance, and practical first steps to help districts safeguard students’ privacy.

To promote season 2 of their series, Anne with an E; CBC and Netflix commissioned Canadian artists to create animated shorts of imaginary sequences. I art directed a talented team at Thought Café to produce this short featuring Anne’s musings on her future career.

The team sought to illustrate the differences between characters through colour and imagery; paying special attention to original book descriptions from L.M. Montgomery.

The period following discharge from hospital is a vulnerable time for patients. Clearly communicating important information patients need to know the moment they leave hospital seems sensible, but is often challenging in practice for several reasons: Patients do not understand medical terms, might not be fluent in English/French, cannot memorize verbal instructions, or are too stressed at time of illness to absorb information.

PODS is a simple tool and set of process changes that was co-designed by patients and providers in 2014.

PODS has now been adopted in 27 hospitals across Ontario, through the support of Health Quality Ontario and the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario’s Adopting Research to Improve Care (ARTIC) program, and is being further spread to 16 organizations across Canada through the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement’s Bridge to Home Collaborative: https://www.cfhi-fcass.ca/WhatWeDo/bridge-to-home.

Collective Arts selected the Dry Bones piece to be featured in their Origin of Darkness collaborative, bourbon barrel-aged stout series. The design was also featured on screen printed t-shirts at Forbidden Root’s Chicago brewery. Proceeds from t-shirt sales went to support Plan International.

A series of posters focusing on environmental issues facing society today. The posters create unease by juxtaposing the frivolity of carnival games with real life problems, suggesting that we often treat life as a game.

The project went on to win the 2014 Applied Arts Student Awards Contest.
