Visual Direction

As the lead illustrator, I collaborated closely with design directors to define a style that balanced relatability with simplicity. We landed on a simplified realism approach; detailed enough to tell a clear story, but abstracted enough to feel universal.

Pros:
Rich storytelling.
Allows us to have many details to support the scene.
It’s easy to make the character very human and relatable.
A unique style to tell a unique story.
Cons:
Lots of details to balance.
Risks making assumptions and stereotyping through details.
Style is difficult to replicate.

Pros:
Allows us to quickly direct the focus
Easy to distinguish at a distance.
Faster execution because we don’t have to ruminate on too many colour choices.
Use colour to tell the story.
A unique style to tell a unique story.
Cons:
The scene is not as rich.
Risks making assumptions and stereotyping through details.
Style is difficult to replicate.

Pros:
More generic characters can be more diversely relatable.
Less risk of assumptions and stereotyping.
Style is easier to replicate.
Cons:
Overly ambiguous characters don’t look like real people and are no longer relatable.
The storytelling is less rich.
The style is ubiquitous in the tech space. We won’t stand out.
Many tech companies use similarly bubbly and ambiguous characters.



Process

I sketched concepts and storyboards from a provided script, then directed a supporting illustrator on vector linework before completing the final illustrations in Adobe Illustrator.


Impact

The intention was to reflect, not idealize, everyday life. Food left stains. Toys were on the floor. The magic of Disney appeared not as a product placement, but as a backdrop to meaningful family connection.

These illustrations:

  • Helped refocus executive conversations on empathy and user lifestyle, rather than features or revenue.

  • Sparked cross-functional discussions about embedding storytelling into UX strategy.

  • Supported a mindset shift from transactional touchpoints to human-centered moments of magic.
